Protective current transformers for system protection

Whereas measuring transformers should saturate quickly above their operating current range, protective current transformers require saturation as far outside this range as possible. This ensures correct signal transmission even at high fault currents.

CELSA protective current transformers are used for system protection in conjunction with switching devices. They are available in numerous protection classes and comply with DIN EN 61869.

Typical applications

  • Short-circuit protection in MV and LV systems
  • Selective system protection with protection relays
  • Standard-compliant protection per DIN EN 61869

FAQ

What distinguishes protective CTs from measuring CTs?

Protective CTs have far-reaching saturation limits to correctly transmit protection signals even at short-circuit currents. Measuring CTs deliberately saturate early to protect connected devices.

Where are protective current transformers used?

For system protection in conjunction with circuit breakers, relays and switching devices in medium and low voltage systems.
